However, this one took place entirely behind-the-scene and gave the Seminole Tribe a complete monopoly on sports betting in Florida. Needless to say, this did not sit well with many casinos in Florida.

Furthermore, the compact while legal, did not technically make sports betting legal in Florida. Instead, it made it legal for them to have mobile sports betting on tribal land. Thus, several lawsuits and appeals made online sports betting in Florida unavailable to the public.

However, on June 30, 2023, the Cour of Appeal made their ruling in favor of the Seminole Tribe. With this ruling, everyone thought online sports gambling would be available in Florida. In response, West Flagler Associates and Bonita-Fort Myers Corp. made an appeal to the U.S. Supreme court. Thus, Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court put a temporary hold on the appeals-ruling.

And this brings us to today, where the hold on appeals ruling is now gone.

Now that the hold on online sports betting in Florida is gone, when will sports wagering be available to Floridians? According to the Supreme Court panel, the Florida secretary of Interior did not overstep her authority in allowing the agreement. However, the central questions in the case “are best left for Florida’s courts to decide.”

Until the Seminole Tribe can fend off separate challenge to the compact, sports betting in Florida will not be available. Due to the complexities of the sports betting legislation in Florida, it will be years before it become available.
