Online sports betting has kept the sports betting industry afloat, especially during the pandemic. States with a good online betting market like New Jersey are doing great, while retail only states are not doing well.
Delaware Needs an Online Betting Market
Delaware is one of the states in the US that offers legalized sports betting, but prohibits online wagering. Across the whole state, there are only three places where residents can bet on sports. These are at Dover Downs, Harrington Raceway, and Delaware Park. But these sportsbooks and casinos were not even open until July 23, with Delaware Park opening on August 30.
Because of this, the total sports betting handle for July is $209,282. This is 90% lower than March’s $3,877,068. It is also lower than July 2019’s $3,920,974 by 84.7%. And if you are reading pay per head blog sites, then you know that other states that have sports betting are already raking in millions in handle in July.
iGaming is Not Enough for Online Gambling in Delaware
Funnily enough, the state lottery says that offering online sports betting is not a priority right now. This is in spite of the state offering online casino gaming. Of course, running a pay per head casino is very profitable. And since sports betting was on a break for a while, the industry saw an increase in online casino gambling. April and May are good months for iGaming in Delaware, with a handle of $28 million each month. The numbers, however, are declining. June’s handle is $23,829,572, while July’s handle is $20,782,681.
For the local online gambling industry to improve even better, Delaware could consider prioritizing bills to allow for legalized online sports betting. After all, there are quite a few states nearby who are doing much better with online gambling markets that include sports betting.
