Regulations for Sports Betting in Missouri

Vote for Sports Betting in Missouri PassesThe demand for sports betting in the state has been a long time coming. With seven out of the eight states that border Missouri, they are losing out on potential revenue that instead goes to Kansas and Illinois. With this law, Missouri can also earn from tax revenue and licensing fees coming from sportsbook operators. And with online gambling being convenient and accessible, residents will no longer need to cross the border, or even leave their homes, to enjoy betting on their favorite teams.

According to the law, the state can allow up to 14 online sportsbooks to operate in the state by next year. While it is very easy to create a bookie website, operators in the state will have extra measures to take. This is because those who want a license will need to partner with an existing operator in the state.

There are 6 licenses available for each Missouri casino operator. Then there are 6 more licenses that are reserved for each of the major professional sports teams in Missouri. These are the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Cardinals for the MLB. Then you have the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The MLS has the St. Louis City SC and the NWSL’s Kansas City Current. Lastly, you have the St. Louis Blues for the NHL.

Timeline and Other Details for Missouri Sports Betting

Vote for Sports Betting in Missouri PassesAside from online licenses, all of the casinos in Missouri can open retail sportsbooks on their properties. There are 13 casinos across the state managed by 6 operators, and they can offer either full sportsbooks, or betting kiosks.

As for the 6 sports teams we mentioned earlier, they can also open retail sportsbooks within, or adjacent to their home venues. Note that there are only a handful of states that allow sportsbooks within stadiums or sporting venues. These are Illinois, Maryland, Arizona, Washington, D.C, and Connecticut.

As to when we can expect residents to be able to place bets, the law allows the launch no later than December 1, 2025. It could take longer, depending on the state regulator and compliance from operators, but they hope to be able to be operational for the 2025 football season. In the meantime, the state will have the next few months to deliberate and finalize regulations for licensing, rules, and the like. Ideally, operators would want to be able to go live before the Super Bowl, one of the biggest betting events in the country.
