Here’s a quick recap of Thursday night NBA action. The games highlighted Victor Wembanyama’s second 5×5 stat line, a Ja Morant triple-double, and a Suns comeback win over the Clippers.
With 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and five blocks, Wembanyama is now one of only three players in NBA history to achieve this in multiple 5×5 games. He joined Hakeem Olajuwon and Andrei Kirilenko. In the NBA, it’s rare for a player to achieve a 5×5 line across points, rebounds, assists, and other categories. With six, Olajuwon owns the record for all-time.
The 2023–24 Rookie of the Year, Wembanyama, had done it before in February against the Lakers when he scored 27 points, grabbed ten boards, dished out eight assists, five steals, and blocked five shots. The Spurs, now 2-3, got a boost from veteran Chris Paul, who had 19 points, ten assists, and seven rebounds. The Jazz fell to 0-5, with 16 points from Collin Sexton. You have better chances to become a basketball bookie than the Jazz winning the title this season.
Ja Morant’s Triple-Double During Thursday Night NBA Action
The Memphis Grizzlies won against the Milwaukee Bucks 122–99, primarily due to Ja Morant’s 12th career triple-double. Morant was unstoppable with 26 points, ten boards, and 14 assists. In the second quarter, he made a spectacular seated alley-oop pass that Santi Aldama dunked.
The Grizzlies won their third game in a row after suffering a two-game losing run, with 19 points from Aldama and nine boards. Despite a first-game victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, the Milwaukee Bucks’ losing streak has already reached four games.
Damian Lillard’s shooting woes persisted, as he missed all 12 attempts, including 0-for-6 from outside the arc, while Giannis Antetokounmpo paced the Bucks with 37 points and 11 boards. Four points were Lillard’s final tally. Head coach Doc Rivers, 63, has been in charge of the Bucks since last season when he replaced the dismissed Adrian Griffin. Rivers has been critical of the team’s weak defense in particular.
Suns’ Come-From-Behind Victory Against the Clippers
In Thursday’s 125-119 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, the Phoenix Suns rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit. Suns’ comeback leader Devin Booker had a double-double (40 points, five boards, eight assists, and three steals) on 61.1% shooting and 5 for nine from beyond the arc. Royce O’Neale scored 21 points and seven boards, while Kevin Durant scored 18. At the Clippers’ new arena, the Suns have won twice this season.
Lakers forward James Harden had a triple-double (25 points, ten boards, and 13 assists), while guards Norman Powell (23) and Ivica Zubac (22) scored for the team. The Suns’ record improved to 4-1, and the Clippers’ record dropped to 2-3.
Paolo Banchero, a franchise player for the Orlando Magic, will be re-evaluated in four to six weeks after sustaining a ruptured right oblique. However, the injury has put him out indefinitely. On Wednesday, as the Magic were losing to the Chicago Bulls 102–99 in the fourth quarter, the player suffered an injury.
After getting off to a hot start this season, Banchero—named the NBA Rookie of the Year for 2022–23—scored 50 points in Monday’s victory over the Indiana Pacers. Just behind all-time top scorer LeBron James was Banchero, the second-youngest player in NBA history to produce a 50-point, 10-rebound, five-assist performance.
