Brittney Griner Re-signs with Phoenix Mercury
Brittney Griner will return to the Phoenix Mercury. She was a free agent and signed a one-year deal with the team. Also, Griner returned from a ten-month jail time in Russia last December. Russian authorities arrested her at an airport for drug possession. She was released as part of a prisoner exchange last December.
According to bookie software reports, Griner last played for Phoenix in 2021. She helped the team reach the Finals of the WNBA. Also, she got 20.5 points and almost ten rebounds per game during that season.
Mercury drafted Griner as the top pick of the 2013 WNBA draft. She is now listed as part of the team’s roster on the league’s website. According to sports news reports, Griner stayed out of the public eye after returning from Russia. However, there are exceptions. She made public appearances during the Super Bowl, MLK Day event, and Phoenix Open in Phoenix.
Brittney Griner Returns to Mercury
She failed to attend a training camp held by USA Basketball earlier this month. However, the team made it clear that she could take as much time as she needed to determine whether or not to play for the national team again.
After Griner signed with the team, the WNBA stated it would look into providing her with charter flights and other unique travel arrangements.
Sunday afternoon, the Mercury announced the extension of Diana Taurasi’s contract with the team, which she had signed earlier Saturday. Since being picked first overall by the Mercury in 2004, the WNBA’s all-time top scorer has played on just that team.
