However, no one will be allowed to place a wager just yet. According to the state’s regulator, it looks like residents will not be able to place bets until April next year at the earliest.
But why the long wait if the law goes into effect on Monday? While the time it takes to open a sportsbook is relatively quick, the case is different for sportsbooks in Maine. Back in May, Governor Janet Mills signed a law that will allow sports betting in Maine. Under the law, indigenous tribes will have exclusive rights to offer online sports betting. The law will take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the legislative season.

The law will also allow casinos to offer retail sports betting. Of course, the advantage will lie with the tribes, since online sports betting is much more popular. In fact, in 2021, 87% of wagers placed in the country are from online sportsbooks. For now, though, residents of Maine will have to wait. In the case of sports betting in Maine, we can expect a launch from anywhere between April 2023, to as far as the first quarter of 2024.
