The residents of Louisiana have been waiting for a long time to legally wager on sports. Almost a year ago, the Louisiana Legislation made betting on sports legal. Two months ago, the LGCB was able to offer emergency sports wagering regulations. This gave them the power to start taking applications for sportsbook licenses as well as sports betting software providers.
This measure was taken as a way to speed up the availability of legal sports betting in Louisiana. Since then, the Louisiana Gaming Board has been working to make and approve the final gaming regulations. Now, it is just a matter of time for operators to receive their sports wagering license and start taking bets.
Legal Sports Betting in Louisiana will Start in November
They say good things happens to those who wait, and the way is almost over! While it may not be as fast as some gamblers want it, the LGCB expects it to happen in November. According to Ronnie Johns, the LGCB Chairman, the first casinos are getting close to getting their sports betting license.
He said that he “understands the public wants this very badly, and we’re working overtime”. However, there is still work left to do as they have “to dot our I’s and cross our T’s”.
At the moment, Louisiana is home to a total of 20 legal riverboat casinos, racinos and land casinos. Out of those, 13 have put in their application for sports betting. Most of these locations are working overtime to be able to take sports wagers by November. For example, Harrah’s casino is turning the former Acme Oyster House restaurant into a temporary sportsbook.
LGCB officials expect the remaining 7 gambling operators to apply for a sports betting license by January 2022.
It is true that some casinos have been taking sports wagers since October. The Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville for example has been taking sports bets since October. However, they are doing so without the state regulation. Furthermore, the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana have also been operating sportsbooks.
The plan is to hallows sports betting in first in casinos that have their sports betting license. Afterwards, they will look at sports betting platform vendors will be undergoing a review. Eventually, those in compliance will be able to open an online sportsbook and mobile betting apps.
