The latest news in legal U.S. Sports Betting is that Washington DC Delays Retail Sports Betting until 2021. This is because despite receiving 7 seven sportsbook applications, there has been several delays due to various circumstance. Therefore, the D.C. Office of Lottery and Gaming believes sports betting will not be available until the summer of 2021.
According to Pay Per head Blogs, the main reason for the delay is the because of the COIVD-19 pandemic. Due to the Pandemic, field technicians from various sportsbooks have not been able to visit potential sports betting shop locations. Therefore, until the coronavirus is under control, they will not be able to visit the Washington D.C. area.
In addition, out of 7 sportsbook applications to the D.C. OLC, only two have been given approval. The rest of the sportsbook operators and supplier applications are still under review. Combine this with supply chain issues for receiving the proper equipment from overseas is causing the delay.
A 6 Month Delay for DC Retails Sports Betting
Washington DC Delays Retail Sports Betting until 2021 is not such a bad thing. Originally, the plan was to have retail sports betting available by the end of 2020. However, the 9 months delay for DC Retailers is understandable.
According to Pay Per Head Providers, GambetDC which is the DC online sports betting platform began operating in May. However, they have not been able to make any real profits because of the lack of sports. The initial projection for the 2020 fiscal year was $56.2 million and is now at $34.1 million.
For GambetDC, who were hoping to have their retail shop available in the fall, the delays is not too serious. This is because of the lack of sports which would probably not be enough to cover their operating cost. Thus, the delay is until next summer is frustrating but understandable.
